This is a blog for and by members of the Legends Fort Canning Club. The Club is about to undergo a dramatic renovation. From what we have been shown, feelings and feedback from Members have been mixed. Let's hear what people have to say!
We are actively trying to get list of Members so that we can keep everyone updated on various news, discussions and issues. We are also looking at organising our own Members' Conference. Please click here to leave your details. And don't forget to let other members know we are here. |

During the member meeting, rep from Club mentioned about the survey.
1)As a member, I do not remember any survey post to me.
2) From the comment, there is a few memberships scheme, which i was not aware, If i have being told ,i would opt for the social members, because the club at over the causeway is poorly manage.
To Owners & Mgts of the Club.
In your letter dated 25 Sept 2008.
"From 16 Oct 2008 to 1 Apr 2009,member subscription fees will be waived"
1) Am i right to say that my monthly subscription $125 before GST will be waived.
2) I had talk to a few hospitality experts, what is the percent of looking for a job in this industry for the next 3 months.
All agree that from now till end of the month, it is difficult to look for a job both in F&B and the hotel industry, as the current staffs is waiting for their AWS and bonus.
As such, the layoff staffs from the club will be greatly affected. On top of that, with the current world economy affected by financial sector, it going to be worse. The Finance Minster have also highlighted that Spore economy will not be spare. It will likely be a few qtr.
Based on the what was communicated to members during the meeting, the projected completion date was about 6 months , assuming there is a overrun. Let assume to be 8 months.
I propose to the owner of the club.
Phase 1, Build the glass house. When the new glasshouse is ready. Phase 2, Renovate and upgrade the existing club house. With this, we can achieve a few objectives.
1) Members get to use the facilities and continue to pay the sub fees. Let assume all 1200 members is paying at S$80, 1200 members, $96,000 before EBIT
2Cafe continue to bring in, assuming S$20,000 EBIT
3) Chinese restaurant get to bring in, assuming S$30,000 EBIT
4) Bar continue to bring in assuming S$10,000 EBIT
Total is S$156,000 EBIT, although this may not be the significant amounts to the owners
Staffs that are going to be layoff will not be affected, although I do not know how many in total. When the glasshouse is ready, staffs that are supposed to be layoff will be will reassign to the new glasshouse.
As I misplace my membership contract,if any of the members can email me jasontay72@yahoo.com, we can explore if we have other alternatives from the legal points of view.
Hello Joe and All,
In my opinion (and I have to be careful and make sure that I say "My Opinion", or else I may get sued by Mr. Oh), there has been nothing but deception and manipulation undertaken by the management at the Legends Fort Canning pertaining to the entire renovation of the club, the shut down, the new clubhouse, etc. When Mr. Hofer mentioned the changes to me about six months ago, all he said was that they were going to put in a few guest rooms. Most of us took that to mean seven or eight rooms in the back area near under utilized parts of the club, not a complete total destruction of the entire interior of the property, kicking us out for six months, and putting us in a facility that is a fraction of the size of what we have now. In addition to that, we lose the character of the beautiful facility that we so love right now, which is what we signed up for. Let's make something clear, the building is NOT OWNED by the management or investors, it is owned by the Government of Singapore, is a historical sight that technically belongs to the all of us here, and I find it hard to believe that the Urban Renewal Board would have allowed the complete renovation (destruction) of the interior property if they felt that at the very least, the majority of us members were not on board and in favor of such change. To read in the Business Times that Mr. Oh had the audacity to say that most members wanted "Guest Rooms" is completely misleading, and that a survey was taken. I have been a member for about one year, I personally know or have spoken to over fifty members, and none of us have ever been surveyed or knows anyone that has been surveyed. This is a total lie, as far as I am concerned (Sorry, I have to include the pharase "As far as I am concerned", as Mr. Oh threatened to sue me in the lobby of the club on Friday evening at around 8:00 PM). In my opinion, the club management had this move in mind all along, and they shoved it down our throats as quickly as they could. Think about it, we had one weeks notice before the meeting, and they gave us about two weeks notice prior to their shutting down the club. They made their decision on what they were going to do a long time ago, without any concern for our feelings or without getting any consensus from any of us. If the management had any consideration for us at all, then they would, at the very least, keep the club open until the new club house was finished, then move us over to the new place. They didn't even make that concession, and in all actuality, they have done absolutely noting for us. We are being punished for their supposed failure to make a profitable business, which is totally unfair. Folks, as the great baseball player Yogo Berra used to say, "it aint over till its over". Let's voice our feelings to the relevant government authorities. Joe, great job in putting this blog together, and taking the lead here. Remember folks, united we stand, divided we fall.

should anyone organize all the existing members to fill a legal action against the misrepresentative from the club? Any consumer protection against this type of misrepresentative to consumer? I don't if I should continue to pay for the membership fee from now..after seeing the current available facilities for member..which are worst than going to a hotel lounge. And yet, we have to keep paying membership for such a low class facility.
